Certificate Course

Gain the counselling skills to help others. This course teaches you exactly what to do and how to do it, and why.  The course is set at a beginning level. It uses a skills-based teaching approach to give you the practical skills, and is very light on theory. This is the same online training our volunteer helpline counsellors did, but without the in-person practice sessions. The course features a client chat-bot to practice your skills on.The course content is based on evidence-based best practice. It was peer reviewed by a qualitied counsellor, psychologist and young comsumer advocate. Youthline CSI has trained peer counsellors for over 50 years.  This certificate is designed to aid acceptance into Degree level qualifications as they are limited entry and extremely competitive. Registration with the NZ Counselling Association requires a degree level qualification, a certificate or diploma does not qualify.  Includes a 180 page handbook The Certificate has 11 sub-courses. These are: Counselling overview -  brief introduction to counselling and the counselling process Engaging - covers how to develop a theraputic relationship Person-centred counselling - the core counselling approach Strengths-based approach - how to build people's strengths and focus on the future Mental Health Toolbox - a collection of the best theraputic and wellbeing tools Resources, Referrals & Closing - online resources, referral databases and how to finish Professional Role & Self Care - how stay in role, abide by a Code of Ethics and look after yourself Crisis Conversations - working with suicidal ideation, child protection, harm to others and self-harm Mental Health & Wellbeing - the mental health system, trauma, depression and anxiety screening Cultural Safety - how to work safely with people different from yourself Working with Māori - introduction to The Treaty, pronunciation, and tikanga.
